Classroom Connections

Students are watching the film, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, and that is prompting many questions and connections. That's what I love about showing a good film in class--it opens students eyes and minds to worlds and situations they may not know about or are exploring anew.

Yesterday, I noticed that a boy's shirt was made of really nice cotton. We looked at the tag to see where it was made and noticed that it was made in Vietnam. They led us to the map to notice where Vietnam is in the world. The situation also led us to a discussion about why the t-shirt was made in Vietnam.

Our math problem solving leads us into discussions about all kinds of life events. Yesterday we discussed triathlons and races as students worked with number lines and division. I explained to students that competing in a race as a team is a good starting point for athletic competition and lots of fun too. We shared a number of related stories before we got busy with the focus mathematics.

Day after day, bright, wide-eyed students are in a constant process of discovery and connection making together and on their own. As their teacher, it's my job to maximize that exploration with as much positivity and support as I can muster. This is the part of teaching that I love best. Onward.
