Donald Trump, former President of the United States, incited and staged a deadly insurrection at the Capitol while he was President which led to the murder, injury, and terror of American citizens, vandalism and looting at our public spaces, and obstruction of justice with regard to a free and fair election. He clearly abused his power and was not faithful to his oath of office to protect, preserve, and defend the United States Constitution.
The preamble of the United States Constitution clearly outlines the responsibility of the President's job. The President of the United States takes an oath to do the following:
Insure domestic tranquility.
Rather than insuring a state of quiet, peace, and calm, President Trump told his loyal followers to "fight." Also, rather than supporting a tranquil, peaceful, and calm transfer of power, Trump fostered a hateful, violent transfer of power by spreading misinformation, staging/inciting a violent, deadly insurrection, standing passively by while the violence continued without stopping it for hours, and never congratulating or working with the newly elected President Biden in peaceful or helpful ways. Throughout his term, President Trump sowed divide, disrespect, hate, and violence via his hateful, mostly untrue spoken and written words and self-serving actions.
Provide for the common defence
Rather than defend innocent American citizens in the Capitol, Donald Trump waged war on those citizens. He told his loyal, rowdy followers to "fight." They fought, injured, terrorized, and killed American citizens. And rather than provide for the common defence of those citizens who were terrorized, injured, and killed, Donald Trump sat back at the White House and watched the carnage for hours and did not provide for the common defence to protect American citizens.
Promote the general welfare
On January 6th, Donald Trump was not focused on promoting the general welfare of the American people. He was not thinking about the health, happiness, and fortunes of citizens working in the Capitol-- instead he was thinking of his own welfare alone. He was not even thinking of the welfare of his loyal followers--followers who were killed and injured during the violent insurrection, and many followers who now face lengthy time in prison, expensive fines, and loss of jobs and careers due to their allegiance to Trump. Trump could have supported a peaceful transfer of power. He could have told his loyal followers to do the same, but instead he riled them up and told them to "fight."
Secure the blessings of liberty
Rather than secure the blessings of liberty on January 6th, Donald Trump acted in ways that oppressed American citizens. He used his authority and his self-serving political views to obstruct and restrict lawmakers from doing their jobs that day. He also oppressed Americans watching the carnage all over the country by creating terror countrywide. Imagine the terror he created in families of Capitol staff and lawmakers who watched the Capitol terror attack worried about the welfare of their loved ones. Imagine the oppression families of those who were murdered, injured, and psychologically harmed by Trump's oppressive, self-serving, authoritarian decision to wage battle on American citizens, and his decision to passively watch the battle ensue for hours without stopping it.
High crimes and misdemeanors
As an elected official who took an oath to preserve, protect, and defend the United States Constitution, Donald Trump had the responsibility to work to protect the American people's liberty and welfare in peaceful ways. Instead he chose to stage/incite a violent terrorist attack against American people including elected lawmakers on American soil at America's public buildings at the day and time Joe Biden's win in a free and fair election was to be confirmed. He made this choice, and this choice was in direct opposition to his oath of office--he clearly abused his power and put American lives and democracy at risk. He should be convicted.
To allow Donald Trump to wage a deadly insurrection on the American people without consequence is to support his self-serving, deadly, and dangerous Trumpist agenda. Trump has proved time and again that he works for his own profit, privilege, pleasure, and power alone--time and again he has demonstrated dangerous, lawless behavior that puts American citizens at risk. He will continue this deadly, traitorous, abusive behavior. He must be stopped. He must be convicted.
Those lawmakers who continue to stand with Trump are either complicent, afraid because they've been threatened, or apathetic with no fidelity to their oaths of office. Those who are complicit must also be convicted. Those who are afraid, must share the threats publicly and let the world know how the Trump team has threatened them. And those who are apathetic should be held accountable for not staying faithful to their oath of office, and they must step down.
To stand with Trump is to stand against the safety and welfare of the American people and our government. It is that simple. Convict Trump.
