There are many who liked Donald Trump. There are many reasons why people liked Donald Trump. Some loved the increase in their retirement accounts and credit Trump for that. Some liked his bullish, White supremacist personna--they fear diversity, want dominence, and have a similar survival-of-the-fittest mentality as Trump, and some believe all that Trump says, and since he only praises himself, they believed him to be as good as he says he is.
Fortunately most people saw beneath the Trump lies, propaganda, and showmanship. Most recognize that Trump is a modern day freak show that manipulates the people to prop up his personal wealth, power, privilege, and pleasure. And since most people see that, he lost the election. Most people didn't want such an errant individual to continue to harm our good country, people, and environment.
For one minute, however, put aside your like or dislike for Trump, and think about the deadly, violent, terrorist Insurrection at The Capitol on January 6th. Think about what occurred and the fact that Trump was complicit. He committed high crimes and misdemeanors.
Why?
Trump staged the event for the day and time of the confirmation of electoral college win for Joe Biden. Trump and his team of elites incited hate and anger amongst their followers by spreading misinformation in manipulative ways leading up to the event.
Trump and his team scheduled this event to coincide with the confirmation--this was a purposeful attempt to obstruct justice.
Not only did they plan the event, but they used campaign dollars, cronies, and publicity to advertise the event.
They also attracted people by giving them a reason to come by branding the event, Stop the Steal, a title that inferred that the election was stolen even though both Republican and Democratic law officials and 86 lawsuits proved the election to be a free and fair election.
Trump himself advertised the event via his popular Twitter channel and other speaking/social media vehicles. He and his cronies continuously spread misinformation about election fraud creating anger amongst their followers. Further, Trump refused to congratulate Joe Biden on his win or work with him for a peaceful transfer of power.
Trump created a stage and program for the day
Trump followers came prepared with Trump-branding such as White supremacist signs and clothing, MAGA hats and clothing, traditional (guns. . .) and atraditional (pitchforks, zipties) weapons.
A stage was set to empower the loyal Trumpsters with a roaring sound system and the White House as a backdrop.
Trump elites watched the loyal followers gather in a tent with many screens. While watching the followers gather, these elites smiled, danced, took photos, and were overall very happy that their plans to stage an insurrection were successful.
Then Trump elites went to the prepared stage and incited the crowd with speech after speech that spread misinformation, demonized specific American lawmakers, and told the followers to fight.
Trump purposely spoke last. He was the main man they were waiting for as they saw him as their leader. He made them wait in his typical wait-and-get-psyched-for-me style. He walked onto the stage with his typical Trump theater and led the crowd to a crescendo by praising them, praising himself, stopping to let them cheer accolades for Trump and hate for their opponents repeatedly time and again, demonizing opponents, and then telling them repeatedly to fight.
He told them he would walk to The Capitol with them adding to their enthusiasm and their support. Yet, he didn't walk with them, instead he scurried to the safety of the White House to watch the fight.
Trump passively watched the deadly, terrorist insurrection for hours without acting
I wish that someone would reveal the footage of Trump watching the carnage because he passively sat by and did not act to stop the murder, injury, terrorism, vandalism, looting, and obstruction of justice for hours.
Finally after President-elect-at-the-time, Joe Biden, implored him to tell his loyal followers to stop, did he speak. When he spoke, he told the followers that he loved them, continued to spew misinformation about the campaign, and did tell them to stop.
Costly, frightening aftermath of the terrorist event
The terror did not stop when the event was over. Trump and his team continued to spread misinformation and work against a peaceful transfer of power thus continuing to incite insurgents' anger and loyalty.
Insurgents who broke into the Capitol to vandalize, loot, kill, injure, and terrorize have been arrested. Some have been prosecuted. Some have lost their jobs. Some were injured, some were murdered, and some may have committed suicide--there were two suicides so far and it is not known if those who committed suicide sided with Trump or were working to protect Capitol lawmakers and staff from Trump terror.
Due to the deadly, violent insurrection, continued threats of terror and harm, and the Trump team's inaction with regard to a peaceful transfer of power, Washington D.C. was put on a type of lock-down and filled with National Guard troops to ensure the safety of the American people and the inaugural event.
The Trump terrorist insurrection cost tax payers extensive dollars.
Lawmakers have had to work extensive overtime hours which not only affects their health and work obligations but takes a toll on their families.
Trump created a need for add-on legislature activity with regard to the impeachment trial--that time and money could have been used for promising action, but instead, as with most things related to Trump, he created a need to prosecute him via impeachment, a needed prosecution both to hold Trump accountable for his abuse of power and to send a message that this kind of deadly, abusive leadership cannot occur in our democracy.
Further information
Many reports point to the fact that the Trump team spent a lot of time planning this deadly insurrection--this appeaers to be a premeditated deadly insurgence.
Any leader knows better than to tell an angry crowd to fight rather than tell them to use peaceful, lawful ways to make change. Every good leader knows the danger that spreading misinformation and lies causes. What Trump did was wrong. He should be convicted.
