Good communication is not defined in the same way by people. What is good communication for me, may be poor communication for you? Especially in this information age where communication is possible 24-7 via multiple mediums through all time zones, the definition of good communication is varied.
With this in mind, I believe it is important for any group of people to make some decisions about what good communication is by establishing parameters. For example, I don't sleep with my phone next to me so any calls I get while I'm sleeping do not interrupt my sleep, but some do sleep with their phones next to them so calls or texts in the middle of the night interrupt their sleep. There's good reason for both decisions, but when it comes to good communication, the time of texting/calling may be a parameter you want to set with those on your team.
The methods of communication are parameters you may also want to establish. For example, what information is best suited for texts, calls, in-person conversation, or email? To establish the protocols with regard to venue may help to improve communication amongst team or family members.
In the days ahead, as I think of this topic, I'll query those I communicate with most often about their preferred mediums and times of day. That will help us to communicate in ways that are helpful. Onward.
