Too often we fall into old patterns when we think about good living. For example, the cries for more childcare support in some ways dismiss the need for more realistic, just, and humane work conditions and fair salaries. Sure, good childchare support matters, but just work conditions and fair pay matter just as much. We need the right combination of these three supports to better our world.
For too long, society has put the priorities of big business and the powerful ahead of the needs and desires of everyday people. Instead I think it's time to put good living for all at the helm of decision making and policy. How can we foster good living for all here in the United States and around the world, and with this question in mind, what does this mean for policy decisions, laws, and related action?
There will not be a one-size-fits-all answer
Good living for all is not a one-size-fits-all proposition, however, there are some common threads including safety, basic needs, health care, education, and adequate resources including needed dollars to live a good life.
Consider who profits from policies
Even policies made to serve all may often serve those in power more. How can we make policies that truly give all people the personal power they need to live good lives?
What are win-win policies and laws
What laws and policies truly enrich our lives and empower our days?
What do we really want?
Do we spend enough time truly figuring out what we really want? I often refer to a time at a round table with many powerful people, mainly men, at Google. At the table, people shared what mattered to them most. Everyone said family--yet, do we really do what it takes to support healthy, happy family life in the United States? I don't think we do enough. Starting with a focus on empowering families with the definition of family as those you choose to love and care for may be a good way to think about good living, good laws, and good policy. Onward.
