The childcare dilemma

Many politicians are advocating for greater childcare supports. I think this is good, but I also think that we have to broaden our definition of what childcare supports look like.

Instead of simply increasing funding for childcare personnel and centers, I think we should increase our support for families, and let them choose how they will spend the money.

There is great joy in raising your family and getting to know and serve your children well. Too many American parents do not have the opportunity to engage in this joy because they are working too hard for low pay in tough, unjust situations. This circumstance does not only challenge workers, but these circumstances challenge children and family life too.

Why not give every family $20,000 a year to use as they will to care for up to two children from birth to age six. This, I believe, might invigorate care and attention to children as well as stronger, better, more loving and happy families. What do you think?
