Holidays: The Gift of Hospitality

As the holiday season takes hold, I am mindful of the gift of hospitality.

Hospitality defined: the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers.

Yesterday that gift was extended to me by relatives and it was a welcomed experience.

Our relatives had prepared their home so that when we arrived it was warm and welcoming.

The hosts and guests filled the table with delicious foods, and then we sat down to eat, exchange stories, and relax.

After that people talked, the children played, and we all relaxed by a crackling fire--a quintessential New England Thanksgiving experience.

As we drove home, I realized that the gift of hospitality is a wonderful gift. For me, it was a gift that took me from the day-to-day ups and downs of work and family life to the holiday season with joy.

It's a gift I want to give in the weeks ahead as I host family and friends.

As my life and the world around me changes, I realize more and more that the gifts we buy are so much less important than the gifts we create--gifts of time, care, friendship, love, and hospitality.

Happy Holidays!
