Happy Mother's Day 2015

I always wanted to be a mom.

I drew pictures of my future family when I was a little girl. It was very important to me that I marry a man that would be a good dad. Having a family has always been my main priority and I'm so happy that I was able to follow that dream.

So today, on Mother's Day, I'm reflecting on the role of mom. I'm not that old fashioned, traditional mom, but perhaps if you combine what my husband and I do together for our children, we'd meet that vision. Together we put home and family first with regard to our finances, choices, home, and time--we want to do the best we can for our children and help them to have good lives.

We get great joy by spending time with our children and sharing in their triumphs and day-to-day events. We help them with their challenges too.

While we impart our vision and beliefs, we also work to honor their spirit, direction, and life view too. We know our children are not us and have their own paths to travel.

Last night, my sons honored us by making a wonderful meal and giving us the chance to celebrate as a family.

My mom gave me many great lessons for living well too. At 85 she continues to embrace life with positivity and energy. She doesn't let life's struggles get in the way of a positive spirit, laughter, and love of her family--a family of six children, thirteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

No one can beat her cooking and everyone looks forward to her signature macaroni and cheese, oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies, and beef stew. She still hosts a regular Tuesday night dinner for any family members who want to come.

Also, Mom's memory for stories of the past is bright and clear as she recounts her family's history with a sparkle. Stories about summer weeks in Watertown, MA, meeting my dad, St. Peter's High School, growing up on Heard Street, working at the court house, and family vacations entertain all the generations. Like her dad, my mom can often be found at family vacations holding the family's newest member. Babies delight in her embrace.

Today many of us will gather at my brother's oceanside city neighborhood to celebrate Mother's Day. It will be great to see the family, share food, talk, and play.

Family is truly a terrific gift in life, and having special days throughout the year to celebrate and honor family helps us to stop and focus on the best that life has to offer.

Happy Mother's Day! Enjoy!
