What is the Life You Dream Of?

What is the life you dream of?

That's the conversation I plan to have with one of my children this week during his spring break.

I want him to dream a little more about who he is and what he wants.

I don't want him to simply follow paths because those paths are convenient, popular, or traditional, instead I'd like him to think deep and dream--what is it you want to be, where do you want to live, what do you want your life to be like?

I've always been a dreamer so it's natural for me to dream about who and what I hope to be. Step by step I've done my best to navigate the path ahead. It doesn't always go the way you want, but as a dreamer, you learn to work with the changes that occur.

As I coach my son ahead, I'll focus on the following points:
  • What kind of job/work elements do you hope for? For example, I didn't like jobs where I was sitting a lot, that's one reason I chose to teach, I like the movement that teaching brings to the daily work. There are many other reasons why I chose teaching too, but this conversation is not about me.
  • What kind of people do you want in your life? What do you see the social and relationship aspects of your life to be like?
  • Who do you hope to be in ten years and how are you going to navigate your path toward that vision or dream?
Honestly, I as I think about my son's life, what I hope for is that he chooses a path where he lives a good, happy life that includes contribution to others and the world, and the ability to care well for himself and those he loves and lives with. I know there are many different ways to reach those goals.

So, in summary, I hope he'll make some time for dreaming and vision setting in his busy schedule of college activities, friendships, and fun!
