Timeline differentials

Sometimes conflict occurs because our timelines and sense of urgency differs.

While one may take a laid back attitude toward a particular issue, another may be anxious to solve the problem right away.

When we work together, we have to consider each individual's sense of urgency and timelines via explicit discussions about time and priorities.

These simple questions can help in situations like this:

  • What is a reasonable timeline for this effort, project, action?
  • How often should we check in with one another as we work towards this goal?
  • When can I expect an answer if I ask a question - an hour, a day, a week?
  • When should I reach out again if I don't hear from you?
In every relationship or good team, time routines take shape. We have a sense of when to expect each other to respond, act, or discuss the situation. However, in situations of new partnerships or teams, this time routine will not be in place, and can pose a conflict if you don't make the time to discuss your related perspectives and expectations. Onward.
