Like most Americans, I ache with regard to the lives lost so violently in Uvalde. Clearly there were many errors that led to this carnage. Errors we can all learn from.
First, the killer was obviously troubled and a danger to others. He did not receive the help or restraint he needed.
Next, the deranged killer was able to buy an assault weapon--why was a weapon like that available? There is no good reason for any civilian to be able to buy an assault weapon or lots of ammunition for those weapons.
Also, when the police were called to the scene there were many errors that beg lots of questions. First, did 911 messages reach the police and others in good time. Next, why did the officers stand back rather than figure out a way to stop the killer and save the children? Good time was lost which likely contributed to the death toll. Yet, if there was no assault weapon, there would not have been as much bloodshed.
What should we do as a country?
First, ban all assault weapons.
Next, put sensible gun laws into place including background checks, safety tests, licenses, insurance requirements, gun tracking and regular review and renewal of gun licenses.
And, re-look at law enforcement training/efforts everywhere--as with all organizations, law enforcement needs to be updated in ways that can better serve people in positive, inclusive, helpful ways.
We can do better.
