Someone I love is about to take a lengthy international trip. I will miss this person as he traverses very new and different landscapes, languages, and cultures. I know that this trip will benefit his life and world as he will be much more aware of our wonderful world after this trip.
When I was close to his age, I took a similar trip. It was amazing to see cultures and countries different than my own. The excitement of exploration and adventure was life changing and enriching. I look back on that trip often, and I have found that the trip gave me a wonderful perspective and experience that connects me to people, places, and events that I wouldn't ordinarily be connected to.
Of course, there is trepidation with travel given the stories we read about world events, yet there's an element of trepidation in anything we do, and what is life if we live it without time to explore, learn, and experience this wonderfully diverse world that we live in.
As I think of this loved one's adventure, it makes me want to work harder to promote cultural respect, environmental protection, global citizenship, and world peace and prosperity. People all over the world should be able to travel and intersect with one another in peaceful, proactive ways--we should be able to share our wonderful resources, cultures, traditions, geography, and more as one people.
We are moving in this direction, and I suspect that as we come closer to unifying as a planet, we'll then meet those from other planets and places in space. It seems that this would be the next natural event in our evolution. There's so much that we don't know, but we can be sure that a good adventure has the potential to be a moment in time that enriches us and gives us positive memories that last a lifetime. Bon Voyage.
