Farewell Dick

Uncle Dick died today.

He was a good husband, father, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, and friend.

Always dressed with care and courteous, you could count on Dick for a kind comment and honest concern.

He was there for us when we got married, had our children, and celebrated many holidays. I got to share in many of his life's triumphs such as his wise and wonderful wife, his beautiful daughters, his kind son-in-law, and his terrific, lively, and loving grandchildren.

We shared good times and fun adventures too. The picture of Dick and Patty kayaking in Boothbay Harbor brings back memories of a great family kayak adventure. There were the parties at Jack and Jeanne's, Marblehead cook-outs in that great patio he built situated in a yard that he carefully cared for and landscaped, and the many wonderful celebrations he and Patty hosted including Kate's wedding, Beth and Kate's graduations, a wonderful wedding and baby showers for me (how kind), and many a Christmas and Thanksgiving too.

Mostly I have watched Dick and his wife Patty carefully--they modeled for me how to live well, have a good marriage, and nurture family. They chose good friends and a beautiful place to live. They had many terrific adventures during their time together and they always prioritized family. I want to continue to emulate the life they lived together with my own husband.

We will miss Dick. We'll miss his respect, dignity, care, and kindness. We'll miss his sense of humor, keen observations, and great questions. We'll bring forth his love of the sea, family, and friendship.

Farewell Dick. I am better for knowing you, and you will live on in the example you've displayed in your many good years.
