As I ready myself to celebrate Dick's life this week, I took a look back through time via Facebook postings. Even though there's been all kinds of dissatisfaction with Facebook lately, I must say that it's an easy way to store pictures and comments about life's memorable events--a timeline that's incredibly easy to find and review.
As I reviewed pictures of the past couple of years while I hunted for the one above, I found myself thinking about the memorable events of the past two years--events that we really enjoyed and look back on often. That made me realize that memorable events help us to live life well--they are the events that tie us together, energize us, lead us ahead, and help us through the more challenging days.
As I look back on the picture above, I remember the day clearly. People came from long distances to celebrate the upcoming arrival of Johnny, who has proved to be a very wise addition to the extended family. All you have to do is look into Johnny's eyes and watch his deliberation to know that. Of course, his wisdom has been supported by his parents' incredible devotion and dedication to his every need--he's a lucky boy. On that day a couple of years ago everyone went out of their way to be there and to make the celebration joyful. And now that Dick is gone, it is a day we'll look back on again with happiness--a day that truly highlighted his dedication to family as exemplified in his daughter's welcoming home, family, and festivity.
This picture and the Facebook review makes me think as well about the memories to come. As I look at all the faces there, I'm realizing that my future will likely involve loved ones' weddings, new babies, graduations, new homes, shared vacations, holidays, and support too as we face the multitude of challenges life presents--challenges made easier by family support and care.
I don't want to lose sight of how important it is to plan for good times together--I'll be thinking about how to do that as we move through this week, a week dedicated to Dick's good life and wonderful family.
