Our faculty is paying attention to the kinds of conflicts students face at school and the language they use to discuss those problems. I believe it is a good focus since when students and adults can name a problem well, it's easy to solve that problem.
We discussed a number of graphics, definitions, and processes today as we talked about this issue. As educators discussed this good focus, I thought about how I might weave this into my teaching this year and next.
I'll work with children to think about kinds of problems and conflicts that happen at school, and we'll discuss the gravity of those problems from not much of a problem at all to one that demands immediate attention and response. We'll also discuss ways to discuss the problems and processes for solving problems. For example, there are many small problems that students can solve on their own with words, and there are those problems that require a teacher's immediate attention--we'll differentiate and look at the continuum of conflicts that occur in school.
Generally we don't have a lot of problems in our school. For the most part students get along, but we do deal with conflict too, and I think this faculty focus overall is worthwhile and will help to make our school an even better place to teach and learn.
