Marine Mom on Memorial Day 2018

My son is a Marine, and at first on this Memorial Day, I found myself ignoring the news reports, stories, and remembrances. I ignored this because I will tell you that I am fearful of my son's choice to serve our country--I don't want to see him have to be injured or killed during his time as a Marine.

When he chose this path, I considered his choice carefully. I read a lot about it, discussed the choice with him, and reflected. In the end, it made sense to me that he was making this choice. I support him and want him to be an ethical, committed, and a good Marine. I want him to as much as possible work with his comrades to forward what is right and good for people, our country, and our world.

While he is working to do his work well as a Marine, I will be working to advocate for politics and policy that take the lives of every serviceman and woman seriously--a government that never takes lightly the assignments, supports, and efforts of our military personnel. I want them to think of every servicewoman or man as if they were deciding for their own son, daughter, husband, wife, brother, sister, friend, or other loved ones. I don't want our government to treat the military and their role with a callous attitude towards humanity, and I want to support force only when it is absolutely the last resort. I would LOVE to see our military evolve more and more to be a peacekeeping military that rarely to never uses force, but instead shores up cultures and communities in our country and around the world in creative efforts to better lives for all.

I believe our world continues to evolve in ways that are positive and as we evolve we recognize that there are many more sophisticated, nonviolent, and positive ways to anticipate and solve problems and elevate lives.

My son will be a good leader. He will lead with ethics, strength, and honesty. So far those he has met in the Marines have been honorable men and women who are committed to their mission and oath as protectors of our country, people, laws, and rights.

As a Marine mom, I want to send my gratitude to all who have sacrificed time, energy, and lives for our country's future and freedom. I hope we can move forward by supporting our military in ways that matter and ways that focus us mostly on peaceful measures of bettering lives at home and around the world. Onward.
