Clearly there's a reason for etiquette.
As defined by the dictionary, etiquette is the customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular group.
Having been a child of the 1960's, my schooling in etiquette was not complete. The sixties were a time of revolution and revolt against many customs and traditions that were labeled as oppressive and unjust. Thus for many, it was a time of turning away from long held traditions and behaviors.
Yet, as I grow older, I recognize the need for etiquette more and more--when society holds some common beliefs about behavior, those beliefs help people to get along in peaceful and enjoyable ways.
In the next few months, I'll zero in on the rules of etiquette and relay many of those rules to my students and children. Reader's Digest's list may be a good starting point.

- Respect people's privacy
- Speak with positivity and respect
- Treat everyone with dignity
Good manners and etiquette set the stage for positive social relationships, the kind of relationships people enjoy, and the kinds of relationships that positively contribute to one's growth.
