How We Use Time?

How we use time is an essential consideration. How we use time describes who we are, what we value, and who we want to be. Yet most of us fall into the trap of using time as it has always been used rather than thinking about time as something we can master for our own joy, fulfillment, and success.

As I think of time, I realize that in the next year, I want to use time in ways that bring me greater joy and satisfaction--ways that lead me to the people and places I truly enjoy and want to be.

As I consider this proposition, I realize that I want time to be directed towards these paths:
  • enriching my reading culture at home and at school
  • providing time to dream, imagine, and create
  • spending time with those I love most
  • time for inspiration through books, film, natural beauty, museums, and travel
  • simple, nutritious, and quality foods
  • a simple, welcoming home
What I don't want to spend lots of time on include the following:
  • dull events and conversation
  • traditional, but not beneficial, teaching/learning or personal endeavor
  • endeavor that is prejudicial, close minded, or limiting
  • contribution to a world I don't want such as a world of pollution, unkind people, passivity in the face of struggle or oppression, senseless objects, and for money and wealth only
There is so much richness in life including the richness of beautiful, natural spaces, the human quest for truth, the challenge of creativity and collaboration, the discovery of beautiful ideas, the arts, music, performance, and the nurturing of good lives. The limitations of time stare me in the face all the time as I notice the amazing potential for what is right and good all around me. The best I can do to face this time limitation is to choose well with the time I have, the vision I hold, and the person I am and want to be. Time is precious. It is a great gift that is fleeting, a gift we should take seriously and use with care. Onward.
