Teaching in a Trump world means educating at a time when the President of the United States demonstrates no real support for education or children hence it takes more work from every educator to work against our current national neglect for education and children.
Thankfully, education, in a large part, is supported by local and state governments, and I work in a state that generally does a good job with education funding. Yet it's true that our state should do more to equitably fund education across communities so that there is not such a great divide in opportunities dependent on a community's socio-economic status and needs.
So as I listen to more discouraging news of Trump's obsession with a wall rather than working collaboratively to really look deeply and make positive decisions with regard to the immigration/refugee situation, I am thinking about what I'll do to forward my beliefs and commitment to children, education, community, and country.
First, as I note all the time, I'll work to create a warm, loving home for my family and friends. It's limitless what you can do for those you love, and by giving what I can when I can, I can contribute to a strong and loving family culture. That's positive.
Next, at school, I'll do all I can to help every child in my charge the opportunity to learn in positive, live enriching ways. There's lots that I can do in this regard, and with that in mind, I'll focus my efforts mainly on math, science, and SEL learning and teaching.
With regard to the political sphere, I'll continue to read, study, write, and advocate for what I believe to be right and good for this country and world. I'll support politicians who care deeply about equity, environmental protection, fair taxation, affordable/accessible heath care, quality education, and efforts to build a more fluid, peaceful, happy, and healthy world culture. I will write against lawless, self-serving, prejudiced politicians who hold a narrow view of what it means to build a good strong country and world. I know that we can be much more creative, positive, and life enriching when it comes to what we do with and for people, and I support political leaders who share that vision.
Further, I'll reach to learn more by reading and studying what I can to improve my ability to understand and interact with politics, education, community, and family.
Trump's lack of empathy, care, honesty, and positive leadership has been a wake up call to people everywhere about what it takes to build a positive, loving, and kind community. He has shown us what a life of callous greed creates and helps us all to solidify a better way for our own lives. Onward.
