Our team is preparing for the term two student-led conferences.
Students will reflect on the program priorities in general and also reflect on specific subjects and learning goals.
The reflections will be placed in student showcase portfolios--portfolios that include reflections and evidence of significant learning events. In addition to reflections, students will include photos of important learning events and examples of their best study efforts and results. Plus, teachers will add a stats sheet to the portfolio that lists students' overall assessment results to give family members and students a snapshot of their academic strengths and challenges.
Students will lead their conferences using their portfolios as a guide. They'll introduce their family members to the teachers and then begin reviewing significant parts of the portfolio. These conferences follow the distribution of progress reports that went out this week. The progress reports provide a glimpse of how students are achieving on expected study habits, school behaviors, and academic standards with checks that signify levels related to consistency and meeting or progressing towards meeting standards. It's possible that we'll discuss the progress report snapshot too during the conference.
The conference will also include a goal setting page which children will complete prior to the conference and after all their portfolio prep is complete. The goal setting sheet will ask students to name a few goals they have for the next term. This sheet will also ask students to name ways that they can help themselves meet those goals and ways that family members and teachers can help out too.
Student-led conferences are powerful ways to focus the learning team of educators, family members, and students work together to help children work towards meeting their potential for good learning and good living. These are time-consuming, but positive elements of the school year program.
