Have you ever had a broken heart?
Most of us can probably answer that question with a yes.
I don't know if it's more difficult to experience a broken heart yourself or if it's more difficult to witness a loved one experiencing a broken heart.
As I thought about this today, I thought about ways that helped me deal with a broken heart in times past.
Recognize that Love is an Energy
Love is an energy. Anyone who has been in love in any way knows that. When you lose someone you love, that energy is still there, and you have to do something with it. You can pray it forward to the person you lost or you can give that energy away in service to others, a creative act, or some other positive way to use your energy.
Be Honest with Yourself and Others about the Loss
Being honest about your feelings matter. For example, you might really love a person, but know he/she is not right for you. Knowing that and expressing that clearly and lovingly to the person and others can help you to heal.
Help Someone Else
While it can be harsh, some will say, "Get out and help someone else to forget about your troubles." That's actually great advice. Even if you're sad when helping others, it's a great medicine for a broken heart.
Positive Self Coaching
Tell yourself repeatedly that a better day will come. Read quotes and stories about this.
Do Something Nice For Yourself
Be your own best friend. Ask yourself, "If I could do anything for myself, what would I do?" Then take that dream, make it reasonable, and do it.
Have an Exit Plan
If you're really broke, have an exit plan which means plan the extraordinary thing you'll do if all is lost. For me, it's a trip to Hawaii. It won't break me and it's far better than doing something my loved ones or I will regret.
Broken hearts are tough, but there are definitely good ways to deal with it. Don't let a broken heart break you, better days are ahead.
