Our family members will not always live and choose as we might, and when that happens, we have to respect their independence.
In fact, as I think about this topic, I realize that over time this has been a challenge for me and sometimes a point of conflict. I think deeply about how I live my life, and sometimes I wish family members would choose as I choose--I wish they would be long range planners who see life as a big puzzle to solve. Yet, on the other hand, I'm sure that they wish I'd be more laid back, relaxed, and spontaneous like they are.
In truth, there's many ways to live life, and none of us live life exactly the same. We all make different choices, face different challenges, and live somewhat different lives.
At this juncture, I have to work to respect the independent choices family members make especially when those choices are different than what I would do. I have to stand back, and let it happen, but be there should they need or want my support.
In the days ahead, it's more important to be present and available than to offer advice or choose. That's a change in perspective, one that will take a bit of practice.
