As another tuition bill is about to arrive, I found myself reviewing the budget this morning and thinking about how we might save a few more dollars so we can pay these bills on time.
I came up with a number of ideas including the following:
A second job
My energetic, bright young college student son can add an extra job to his summer schedule to make a few more dollars. He's got the energy to do this, and now I need to encourage his efforts in this way.
Heirloom gifts
Our house is filled with objects that we'll never use again, don't need, and have some sentimental value. These items will make good heirloom gifts for family members at important times.
Photo albums
Organizing all the photos and putting them together in photo albums online or offline can make nice gifts as well at special occasions.
Plan ahead
You almost always save money on vacations and gifts, if you plan ahead and purchase items when they're on sale or at a less expensive rate.
Staycations and inexpensive recreation
There's all kinds of ways to recreate that don't cost a lot of money. Improving your cooking, reading books, exploring nearby nature preserves, watching movies, getting together with friends at home, and attending free public events are some of the ways that you can have a good time and not spend a lot of money.
Simple, easy clothes
You don't need a lot of clothes and when you buy quality, classic clothes at good prices, you save in the long run.
There's lots of ways to save today so you don't have debt tomorrow. This is especially important when you're paying for the big and important things in life such as your mortgage, college tuitions, needed car payments, or for special events. Onward.
