How does your family welcome new members?
What do you do to make those new family members feel at home? What are the advantages of enlarging your families with new members?
This is a rather natural process when it comes to welcoming new babies--typically family members are very excited about birth of a baby and what that baby will bring to their lives. I remember the joy our family experienced each time a new sibling was born and then again when the grandchildren came.
New family members can come in all ages and backgrounds--they can include new partners, spouses, friends, children, and the many relatives a new family member brings.
I am thinking about this topic today as I prepare for a family reunion, one that will inevitably introduce me to new family members by way of friends, partners, and relatives of my many children, nieces, nephews, siblings, and more.
First of all, it's great to make time to welcome new family members and learn about what interests them. And to be of help is important too. It's not always easy to join a new family, and any way you can ease the transition is positive.
Then it's important to make space for the new family member by honoring their interests, needs, and what they bring to the family. For example if a new family member really enjoys a pastime that's unfamiliar to you, you may try it out or at least read up on it so you can share in that person's passion a bit.
Families need to adjust their routines, traditions, and time for new family members too. If you're open to what they bring to your family, it's likely that they will enrich your experience of life.
A welcoming, positive attitude towards new family members sets the stage for an even stronger and better family life.
