The challenge to respectfully discuss and debate

Trump times have challenged all of us when it comes to respectful and truthful discourse and debate. His angry, hateful, disrespectful, and demeaning words bring out the worst in us; we want to lash out in response. Yet, if we do, we exemplify the very behavior Trump displays day after day, behavior that angers and frustrates us as people who do our best and work for better. So what can we do as we face the challenge of a disrespectful, hateful President of the United States?

We must do as we wish a President of the United States to do. We must speak and debate with truth and respect. Lying and disrespect does no good for anyone and leads us all away from a United States of America that's a strong country for all of us, not just a wealthy few. We are a country of laws, and we must work respectfully with those laws to support a lawful, positive country that supports all. If we don't like the laws, we have to work to change those laws.

Trump times have exposed greed, lawlessness, and corruption in many pockets of American society. There's a temptation to think that's the way it is, and let it be, but we can't be satisfied with this corruption, lawlessness, and greed. Instead together, we have to help one another work towards and support a lawful country, a country where everyone has the opportunity for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

So during these times when lawlessness, corruption, and greed are on the front page everyday, and the President of the United States and many of his cronies are speaking and writing hateful, disrespectful, and sometimes untrue words regularly, what's an American to do?

First, don't take the bait that disrespectful, lying, and hateful words become. Instead respond with evidence-based respectful discourse and debate. Also block those who spew hate, lies, and disrespect. I blocked President Trump because I don't want his words on my Twitter feed daily. If I want to see what he's writing, I can look at it anytime, but I don't have to see that everyday.

Next, read and learn. The more we know, the better we'll be able to speak and advocate with respect and care.

And, work with others to update and improve your own work so that your work is more inclusive, positive, and uplifting to all that you work with and for.

For some reason, President Trump seeks to divide rather than unite people in the United States. His words incite hate, spread lies, and obstruct the good work possible in our good country. We can't let he and his cronies take us down, but instead we need to stand up and speak out with respect, camaraderie, truth, and good ideas/acts that foster the amazing United States that's possible. We can do better.
