What do you really enjoy?

I've been thinking a lot about about how relationships change these days as people around me move into many varied life places. In many ways it's a time of change for people around me. Yesterday I wrote about making space for that change, and essentially being empathetic to your past self, a self that may not have been as open minded as you navigated your own life and faced the many changes around you.

Today I'm thinking about the question, What do you really enjoy? What brings your life meaning, depth, engagement, and interest? That too will change over time.

As I readied the house for dinner with friends last night, I spoke to many friends and family members on the phone. I heard stories of choices they're making about where they live, what they do, and who they spend time with. As I listened, I thought about what really brings those people joy--the places, people, and events that make their lives joyful? I also recognized that each person's story was different from the others, and each person's story included how they were reacting to changes in relationships, places, schedules, and more.

That's left me with the questions: What brings you joy? What do you really enjoy?

For me, I do enjoy the work I do to plan good learning experiences and contribute to the school community I belong to. I really gain joy from working with colleagues to build a best possible learning program with and for children. That brings me joy. Time flies when I'm doing that.

I also love exploring new places. I often say that my husband and I have a nomadic spirit when it comes to travel. We don't like to stay in any one place long, but instead we enjoy exploring all kinds of different places.

I love adventure too. I don't like frightening, edgy adventures, but instead adventures that challenge me as a person to stretch, plan, problem solve, and explore.

I love to set goals and work towards them. I love the fulfillment that comes when you reach a goal that is meaningful to you--a goal that enriches your live and the life of others.

I love spending time with family--telling stories, sharing meals, visiting beautiful places, celebrating one another, and supporting one another too.

Good books, wonderful movies, comedy, music, bike riding, drawing, making things, shopping, and research intrigue me too.

As we plan our precious time, it's important to know what really makes you happy--the people, places, events, and activities that bring fulfillment to your life. Knowing that helps you to plan that time well and live a best possible life. Onward.
