I ache when I see a friend or family member go through a low point. I've been there and don't look forward to my next visit.
Though it's impossible to believe, there is life after life's most heart wrenching, devastating, challenging events.
Looking back at times when I wondered if I could put one foot in front of the other, I remember how deflated you feel. One time, when I lost someone I loved, I prayed a lot for that person--that gave me a good outlet for my energy and helped to get me back on track. Another time, I invested the tremendous energy born from a devastating event into a professional endeavor. While, in many ways I was broken at the time, the professional event was successful and has been a source of positive connection and pride ever since. One more time when I experienced a painful betrayal, I hyper-focused on some events close to home, and that proved to be positive too. I also sought the consult of skilled professionals and loving family members and friends during these tough times which was helpful too.
None of us know what life has in store for us. We all have some wonderful high points and devastating low points. We need to relish those high points, and do our best to find some meaning and positive energy in the low points.
It's easy to give this advice from the comfortable place where I sit today, but I know that I'll be reading this post someday in the future to encourage my positive movement during the next low point--I don't look forward to it, but I know that events like these happen to all of us. Onward.
