Have you ever been hungry--hungry for attention, hungry for money, hungry for support, hungry for satisfaction, hungry for peace. . . . The list goes on and on and it is likely that there have been times in your life that you feel empty and in need. We've all been there, but for some the hunger strikes more often and is deeper and greater for all kinds of reasons.
There are also times when many of us feel fulfilled. We're satisfied and grateful for our lives, and feel no great need. Times like these are good times and times when we have something to give.
We have to have compassion for those that hunger and look for ways to fulfill their needs with respectful contribution, support, and camaraderie. We know that's the right thing to do, and we know we have looked for people like that during our own times of need.
Too often when people are hungry, they are also embarrassed about their need. This embarrassment may silence people rather than give them the courage to reach out and ask for what they need.
This holiday season is a good time to look out for hunger that may strike those in your midst, and it's a good time to express your own needs if you have them.
In the best of times, we are giving to those in need and receiving what we need too. To eradicate the pain and suffering of hunger is a good aim.
