Sometimes we may project what someone needs without taking the time to truly listen to a person's story or requests. Those projections derive from our perspectives, imagination, and longing more than from another's true needs or interests.
To truly give to another, we have to be open to listening to who they are and what they need. This is often not easy to do because a person's true needs or interests may not match what we value or desire.
To be more present is to be able to take a step back to observe, listen, and understand a person's true longing and needs--what that individual desires to be; truly what they hope and want to be.
As I shop for gifts today, I'll be thinking about the people I love, who they are, what they strive for, and whom they desire to be.
Also, as we think of ourselves and as we nurture ourselves in ways that allow us to give and love in ways that are deep and meaningful, we have to give to ourselves in ways that help us be the people we hope to be, not what others may want us to be. We have to honor our own gifts, dreams, and vision of the life we hope to live, the contribution we want to give, and the relationships that enrich our experience of life. We have to think about how we most enjoy spending our time, what objects bring us pleasure, and the kinds of environments that allow us to be what we hope to be.
Projection doesn't take time to listen, observe, or understand others, and to support each other well demands that we do carefully listen, observe, understand, and be present to those we love and care for. As the holidays arrive, I want to think more about this and follow my own advice. Onward.
