I'm accustom to the small home-big party event since growing up I lived in a relatively small home and had a big family. It wasn't unusual for our small cape house to be filled with fifty relatives at the holidays. Women tended to congregate in the living room to share stories, the men in the kitchen, and the kids running all over the place. It was lots of fun. Later when my husband and I were newly married with also hosted lots of people in small spaces. Once we had a rollicking dance party with students from all over the world in our small, third floor apartment, and another time we had a similar party in our modest split level home. The small space brought people together to celebrate with good food, good music, and lots of cheer.
With Christmas celebrations right around the corner, I'm looking around that same split level home and wondering where we'll make space for all the relatives and friends who will join us this holiday and for the many celebrations to come in 2020, a year of milestone birthdays and a wedding too. The first job is to get rid of the unnecessary stuff, and then to make spaces for people to sit, eat, and enjoy one another's company.
Some people shy away from entertaining when they live in small spaces, but my history has shown me that a good party is a lot more about the warm welcoming atmosphere you provide than the size of the space. Onward.
