Until recently, when I've apologized, a situation of error has become better. Generally people you err forgive you if you apologize. Rarely is an apology rejected.
Life always presents you new situations, and recently I faced the situation of a rejected apology. That's been gnawing at me and making me think deeply about that.
I have never rejected a person's apology. I have always accepted people's apologies and moved on from there.
So, why would an apology be rejected?
Perhaps, people did not feel that the apology was genuine. Perhaps the misstep was one error too many in a series of disrespectful or hurtful events. Perhaps the person who rejects the apology wants to sever or end a relationship, punish the person who made the error or put that person in their place.
Even at school, when I deal with the common missteps that children make, I have never seen an apology rejected.
We may reject apologies because we don't want to move away from a place of belief and comfort, and by accepting the apology, we would have to move towards common ground.
Whatever the case. Sometimes apologies are not received and accepted. Sometimes apologies are rejected. I suspect that in time this situation will make sense, but for now, I admit it has me in a bit of a painful quandary. Onward.
