Stop and Smell the Roses

I remember the day fondly. I was walking in front of the dining hall talking to my classmate, Karen. She said, we have to make time to stop and smell the roses. I had never thought of that idea before, and it has been an idea that has inspired me ever since.

Today, was a day when I did "stop and smell the roses" as I enjoyed my Valentine birthday. As usual, my almost 90-year old parents called to sing me Happy Birthday. I received birthday greetings in real time and online. The children in my class sang a rousing Happy Birthday and there were birthday cakes at lunch and at our teacher meeting at the end of the day. It was a joyful day--one I am grateful for.

It was also a day when cupid clearly had paid a visit to many, many students as the children were chasing each other around the playground with glee. I remember doing the same many, many years ago on my elementary school playground. Even though it was quite cold outside, it was sunny and there was a hint of spring in the air. What also made me happy was to see a few students who have faced challenges in the past rise today to a new height--this was very positive. May it continue.

Tomorrow many family members will celebrate my dad's 90th birthday. I am so happy to celebrate this wonderful day as my dad has been a wonderful man in my life and the life of others. It brings me great satisfaction to celebrate his many years--good years loving and caring for so many as well as years enjoying the best life has to offer--beautiful natural spaces, family gatherings, outdoor adventures, good friends, hard work, and service to others.

Today begins my 62nd year--a year that I hope will find me loving more and loving better. That's my wish. Onward.
