Today many woman from many parts of my life and the lives of people I love will gather to celebrate at a bridal shower. I am looking forward to all these good women having the chance to know one another, share their stories, and celebrate this happiness together.
As a child, I remember our family bridal showers with joy, and my sister and I are planning this bridal shower with those celebrations of the past in mind. We'll include many of the same traditions including little sandwiches, making the ribbon/bow bouquet, delicious desserts, and time to watch the bride-to-be open her gifts--gifts that will help her and her husband to make a happy home.
Another aspect of the bridal shower that I like is the fact that it brings women of all ages together. While I love parties that include both men and women, there is something special about an all-women party, yet I recognize how this can be challenging in a world that is growing with respect with regard to gender identity. Where do people who don't identify themselves as women or men fit into these old traditions? I am sensitive to this, and will think more on it in the days ahead and perhaps choose differently depending on the families and friends included in the event in the future.
My only regret about the event is that I wish I could invite so many more, but when you have a super-big family like I have, it is simply impossible to include all of our relatives and friends at every event. Most of us understand this limitation and try to create other events where more of us can get together.
Celebrations of positive life changes such as a bridal shower are celebrations filled with love and promise--these are celebrations that bring to mind memories from the past and hopes for the future. A main theme in my life these days is Celebrate the Good Times, and today is one of those celebrations.
