Month Two: COVID-19

Today marks the start of our second month of quarantine. School is scheduled to start the first week in May, but many feel that date will be extended.

How will month two be different than month one?

Positive Routines
On the whole our routines at home have been good. I didn't do a lot of baking the first few weeks, which was healthier than last week's series of treats including custard, cupcakes and oatmeal cookies. We'll return to less baking, and more healthy cooking and food prep--that makes us all feel better. Getting outdoors is key for feeling good, so we'll likely continue and elevate those efforts. I live with two physical fitness enthusiasts, and I'm still hoping that will rub off on me a bit more during the next month. We'll continue to socially distance as we want to resist this illness as much as we can, and we'll also continue to dig into our work and school efforts Monday through Friday.

Good Goals

Healthy Living and Summer Fun
I'm still planning on some summer fun at beaches, on mountains, and around lakes. If that can't happen, I'll deal with that then, but for now, I'll do what I can to plan and prepare for healthy summer fun.

Math Concept, Skill, and Knowledge
I'll continue to coach my students' math skill. I teach a large group of bright, enthusiastic, energized fifth graders and a positive goal for them during this learn-at-home time is elevating their math skill, knowledge, and concept and continuing to support our sense of community and care.

Gardening and Re-Organizing/Cleaning
I keep shifting these goals to the bottom of the list, but I'm not giving up on these.

Supporting Family and Friends
I'll do what I can to support family and friends. We'll act with creativity to keep ties close and support one another. We had a virtual birthday party the other night which was crazy, but not as crazy as the SNL Zoom skit which helped to put things in perspective during these crazy times. Next Month includes a couple more virtual birthday parties, a school vacation week when I'll focus on projects, and more good weather hopefully.

Deeper, Better Advocacy
I want to deepen my ability to advocate for what is right and good by reading a number of good articles, doing better research, and writing with greater evidence and care. I truly enjoy the research related to betterment and rather than do this in a reactionary way, I want to do it with a greater focus on what we can all do to make a better world. I see so much potential here. I want to work more in this arena.

I'm sure I'll continue to think deeply about this list and revise as time goes on, having goals and structure really helps during this time. Onward.
