Last night was the first time I really felt the pang of loneliness related to the pandemic. My close family members and I got together via a Google Meet to celebrate my son's birthday. It was the first time in the past five weeks that I really wanted to be together in real time rather than online--I wanted to explore one son's relatively new apartment at the beach and another son's home with his fiance. Yet, we're all committed to following the stay-at-home guidelines so that people, including ourselves, stay safe. The sad stories of individuals catching the virus from relatives, friends, and neighbors who don't know they harbor the virus are crushing. The mysteries related to this virus put all of us at risk, and we owe it to each other to treat this with care, respect, and caution.
One view that keeps me positive during this time is the ability to look forward to good times ahead when family members can gather at beautiful places or for wonderful celebrations. That's the light ahead, and if we want to reach that light as a community, we need to respect the experts' advice now by socially distancing, helping one another as we can, and preparing for the good times ahead. Clearly, it's time to pull together, do what's right, and prepare for better days.
