A Summer of Social Distancing

Pandemic experts have cautioned that we may face a summer of social distancing in order to stay safe and healthy. What does that mean for summer plans and summer living? How will families cope with this potential?

There are lots of questions out there.

We will all closely watch states that have lifted social distancing rules and expectations to see what happens? Will those states, particularly areas in the states that are densely populated, see an uptick in their coronavirus numbers? If the uptick occurs, what will happen?

Who will be able to sustain the social isolation for the common good? Will there be a difference in lives saved versus lives lost related to those who socially isolate versus those who don't?

How can we walk the line between social isolation and living good lives with others safely? What can we do?

In general, I am embracing the mindset that short term sacrifice is worth long term good living. I don't want to be stuck in a hospital for weeks on a ventilator and I don't want to shorten my live if possible. I would rather make the best of things now in order to secure a longer, healthier life if possible.

Yet, I also want to continue to look for silver linings because I don't believe that the sacrifice has to be one without any pleasures, productivity, or social events. We can look for and engage in safe alternatives, and some of those safe alternatives may become positive long term life changes such as more time at home, daily walks or bike rides, gardening, cooking at home, and an overall Earth-Friendly lifestyle that leads to cleaner air, cleaner water, and cleaner soil.

Specifically, my days in the next few weeks will take on these activities, activities that benefit from slowing down my lifestyle since I don't have to commute, take care of another space (the classroom), and meet with lots and lots of people during that time.

Daily Gardening
I'm working on growing my own food. Step by step I'm relearning how to do this and hopefully this will result in some healthy veggies and beautiful flowers in the days ahead.

Outdoor Creativity and Exercise
I will add more and more outdoor exercise and creativity because I've found that being outside is  inspiring, healthy, and helps me to sleep well each night.

Lots and Lots of Good Cooking and Baking
We've been eating all kinds of healthy, delicious meals as we utilize many simple ingredients to create wonderful meals and some sweet treats.

Safe Social Occasions
Now that the good weather is here, we can get together with those we love more often at a safe social distance.

Teaching with a Primary Focus on Small Group and Individual Coaching
A silver lining of teaching and learning during this time is a the focus on individual student's learning via virtual meetings, close review of students' learning efforts, and virtual exchanges via email and in other ways has helped me to coach each child ahead in positive ways.

Reading Great Books, Watching Terrific Shows, and Playing Games
These have been positive, entertain activities during this time.

We'll make the best of these times in safe and healthy ways. We'll continue to listen to the experts, watch what's going on all around us, and respond to the messages, opportunities, and challenges with an open mind, positive spirit, and a focus on healthy, happy living for the long run. Onward.
