Dealing with the silent treatment

I remember when I was young, a family member would use the silent treatment when he was angry. I found that treatment to be torturous. Rather than talk out an issue, the individual simply would not talk to you. It was painful.

Still today, people in my midst use the silent treatment. I understand that it is a preferable treatment to acting out or hurting someone with mean words or worse, but still is it necessary.

Some problems in life hit us hard, and as humans, we resort to all kinds of coping mechanisms, some better than others. So as I think about the silent treatment, I guess it gives us some time to think about an issue and to gain a new perspective and resolve. It's not the worst way to deal with struggle, but it's not the best either.
