Pandemic Response: Should we be looking at major structure change?

Is the pandemic a wake-up call for all Americans that it is time for major structural change in the way we live our lives? What do we think about these categories?

Nursing Homes
Do we need to rethink the role of elderly Americans? Do we need to rethink how we support their care? Have we been housing too many elderly in subpar institutions rather than caring for our older Americans with the best possible love and care? How can we change this? What do we think about these solutions?

  • Multigenerational homes and communities
  • Elder-care pay for family members who stay home to care for their elderly relatives
  • Greater economic and health supports for elderly persons who choose to stay in their homes
Education
Clearly this pandemic has shown me that we have to broaden the education scope to that of child welfare that includes education. Do we want to begin to look at broader ways and more choices with regard to educating our children? How can we continue to revise schools to best meet the needs of all children. What do we think about these solutions?
  • Pay for parents who choose to spend all or part-time at home caring for their children
  • School choice with regard to what a school day looks like--full time in school, half time school/half time home, full time at home, residential schools
  • Access to WIFI for free everywhere in the country for all students
  • Base line of tech support that all children receive including a quality tech device and WIFI
Families
How can we support families better so that they can live healthy, happy lives.
  • Good homes for all families
  • Safe neighborhoods
  • Healthy, positive recreation options
  • Support for positive community organizations
  • Local farms and nutrition sources
  • Equity with economics, rights, and opportunity
Communities
How can we strengthen communities in ways that elevate all lives. What can we do to make important organizations more accessible, helpful, positive, and proactive.

We can definitely rethink many structures and organizations in American culture by refocusing our lens on what's best for all people rather than a few wealthy folks. It's time for reflection and revision--how does that fit into the work you do?
