Kind words

Sometimes the rush that occurs in a school building, makes it difficult to truly stop and get to know one another. Schools are busy places. As I read a few notes I received related to my retirement, I thought about the value and definition of kind words. The kindest words are words that acknowledge aspects about you or your work and life that you truly value--words that recognize where your focus and talent lie. Yet in busy, school buildings, it's impossible for everyone to know each other with that depth and understanding. As one expert noted, schools are like small cities.

The many kind messages I received made me think a lot about kindness--true kindness, not those surface statements that people say because they think they have to say the words. Hopefully, without the extreme hustle and bustle of life, I'll be able to focus in on what true kindness looks like and sounds like. The luxury of this time will help me to look deeply into what kindness is and how it acts.

This journey will begin with making more time for listening--listening to stories of loved ones and others. I hope it will also include multiple acts of kindness. As I renew energy reserves, complete a number of unfinished tasks, and reorganize my life, it is my hope that I'll begin anew with the knowledge I've learned and experiences I've had.

It will take time to rid myself of that urge to rush as it seems like I've had to rush most of my life. Growing up in a busy house with lots of children included lots of rushing and being a busy mom myself who was focused on supporting my three children included significant rushing too. I'm looking forward to slowing down in ways that bring greater intention and kindess in the days to come.
