Tough times is a continuum--there's almost always someone who is experiencing a tougher time as well as those whose "tough times" are far less of a struggle than what you are facing.
Frankly, however, these are tough times for the United States--times like I've never experienced before. We've never had a worse President of the United States, greater corruption, and a devastating public health crisis like this pandemic. Also, because the country is filled with corrupt, self-serving government leaders, this whole situation has become an invitation for more corruption, cheating, and self-serving unAmerican behavior.
People like Trump and Betsy DeVos greet hard times as an opportunity to cheat more and elevate their will to create a large servant class in the country. They don't care about you or me. Instead, they willfully look for ways to elevate their personal lifestyles complete with yachts and golf clubs. They are the fire-sale leaders who profit on people's misfortunes right before our eyes. It's disgusting.
Who would believe that leaders would turn against front line workers in ways that spread mistrust about their motives and put their lives at risk due to self-serving, unsafe decisions? This is not the America I've been proud to live in all my life.
How does a person stay strong during these times?
Stay safe
It's important that each of us does what we have to do to stay safe. We may have to make some difficult decisions during this time. Sadly, there is little public support for the everyday person during these terrorizing Trump times, so you have to do what is right and good for yourself and your family while not harming others at the same time.
Advocate and support good leadership
Find ways to support and back good leaders, leaders who earn your confidence and act with empathy, intelligence, and care.
Lead
Find ways that you may lead as well--we all have leadership capacity, and we have to identify ways that we can lead forward during these times.
Know and live your values
Reflect on your values, understand what you believe in, and live your values. In tough times, there's a temptation to give up on your values--that's not a wise choice. Do what you have to do to retain your values.
Help others
When and where possible, help others.
In the spring, I knew were in the midst of tough times, but I truly thought leaders would rise to the challenge and we would remain united during these hard times. I thought that we'd rise together through the suffering, but instead too many of our leaders are willfully looking out for themselves and a few wealth cronies alone. Too many leaders don't care if Americans live or die, and too many leaders are passively and irresponsibly not doing their jobs.
These are hard times. We have to acknowledge that, and then move forward doing the best that we can do for ourselves and others. Onward.
