We can all be cynics and naysayers from time to time, but in general it is not a positive way to be. That old adage, "If you don't have something good to say, say nothing at all," is often the best course of action because when we meet other's pursuits, challenges, and struggles with criticism and negativity, we take them down.
Of course, when it comes to matters of crticial importance, it is necessary and right to speak your truth, share your ideas, and advocate for justice--we can't let old ideas and actions that harm and obstruct the best of us continue, but when it comes to personal differences about more trivial matters, it's often best to hold your tongue and stay silent.
Recently, I embarked on a new, personal, and challenging journey. This journey, in most ways, fits into the category of trivial matters because for most people it's a simple matter, but for me, it is a mountain to climb. I shared a few details about the quest with a friend only to receive destructive critique and commentary. That did not feed my quest in a positive way, but instead made me want to give up. This quest is so challenging for me that even one statement of negativity works against my resolve--that's how embedded this issue is--it's an issue that takes all of me to conquer.
So it's important to know who your champions are for any tasks that you take on. For example, I was a fan of team teaching. My research showed that there were significant advantages to this approach. I worked with many people who also championed this strategy, and as we employed the strategy, we were successful, in part, due to the good team we had.
For every challenge and struggle, big and small, the key is to find those who support you with positivity, good ideas, and helpful energy. It's good not to share these challenges with naysayers, critics and cynics as they'll take you down and work against your success. Though, if you're strong enough, it is sometimes good to listen to a few naysayers, critics, and cynics since they'll force you to think about the challenge in new ways, ways that can help you to avoid potential problems or missteps.
Most people love a good challenge, and with the right energy, team, and mindset you can truly benefit from meeting challenges like this. On your journey, however, beware of how others support you or take you down--find the champions in your midst, and let them help you meet the challenge you've chosen to conquer.
