Strong families require commitment

If you want a strong family life, you have to commit to that.

What does a commitment to strong family life look like?

Listening, Hearing

You have to listen to one another, and hear what each other has to say. Then you have to respond to those words with support and care. Like any good relationship, you should listen more than you talk.

Presence

Be there for each other. Be prepared to help when asked and needed.

Traditions and Celebrations

Celebrate each other's significant events and contribute to traditions. Celebrations and traditions keep families strong.

Don't Sweat the Small Stuff

Don't let little things get in the way of strong relationships.

Stay Connected

Find ways to stay in touch--distance can challenge strong families.

Don't Compare

Every family member's life will be somewhat different from other family members' lives--differences will occur. Embrace the differences and see those differences as advantages. While we only have one life, we can enjoy a much more multidimensional life if we accept, embrace, and enjoy each other's differences.

Be Generous

Be as generous as you can be.

Responsiblity

Take responsibility for your own actions. Don't lean unnecessarily on family members. Save the leaning for times when you really need it.

Shared Memories

Find common ground and build shared experiences and memories based on that ground. Collaborate on shared projects, events, and adventures. Have fun together.

Strong families provide a solid foundation to good living, but strong families don't just happen. It takes work and commitment to make a family strong.
