The small garden in pots and other containers on my porch is bringing me great satisfaction this summer. The porch sits right outside of the kitchen, so when I want to add a few herbs to my cooking, I simply walk outside to the porch, pick the herbs and add them to the dish. This has made the food tastier and healthier. I also have several pots of lettuce growing that are easily cut and added to salads. The cherry tomatoes are beginning to ripen too.

I don't know why it has taken me so long to find the magic of a porch garden. This first attempt has given me all kinds of ideas about what I want to plant now and next year. One small strawberry plant has just resulted in a few strawberries. Next year I want to grow more strawberries. I also want to have a more varied collection of herbs and greens, and I want to start my seeds indoors earlier. The porch garden can start earlier since I can easily bring the pots inside if a frost is predicted, and the porch gets a lot of sun and warmth earlier in the spring than the yard below.
Another advantage of the porch garden is that it is a far reach from the woodchucks and rabbits that nibble on my yard garden.
A porch garden brings a lot of satisfaction, tastier food, and better health too. If you don't have one already, I recommend that you start one. If you have one, and have some ideas for me as to how to better this endeavor, please share.
