Some people won't drive through a neighborhood riddled with violence and poverty--they don't want to see the despair or be threatened by the anger, violence, and struggle that exists. To avoid this, is not to know what exists, and when you don't know about the true nature of despair or struggle, you cannot effectively work for change.
I feel the same way about the RNC Convention. On one hand, I don't want to waste my time listening to the Trump team's manipulative, trickster litany of lies, exaggeration, hate rhetoric, and prejudice. I don't want to be a witness to Trump mania--the kind of mania where Trump always paints himself as the hero despite the truth which shows that he is a destructive, dangerous force when it comes to a peaceful, positive culture and nation. However, if we don't listen, his lies and manipulation will have greater strength. People need to hear his lies and call him out--we cannot let such a dangerous and manipulative man trick so many Americans into thinking that he cares about their welfare or good living. Trump cares about Trump and that's about it.
Why do people support Trump? I think there are a few different reasons.
It's all about me
There are a group of Trump supporters that are solely focused on their own personal wealth and nothing and no one else. These people don't care about the environment, peaceful communities, or the welfare of others--it's all about them. They are true Trumpsters and use their wealth to prop up their Trump puppet to gain greater wealth. Trump's own daughter clearly belongs to this group as she and her husband make millions off of their association with the Trump team.
It's all about my retirement account
There are some Americans who live and breathe by the bottom line of their retirement accounts. Their retirement accounts have made good interest in the past few years, and that's all they look at. They don't realize the deep costs that a polluted environment, lack of social supports, poor health care, enormous wage gap, debilitating deficit and an unleashed and mismanaged pandemic have on their overall quality of living and long term investments. These people live for the day with a very narrow focus, and unfortunately are tricked by Trump's dangerous and destructive leadership.
He's the great white hope
There are a group of racist Americans who get all their news and information from propaganda stations like Fox News who are easily manipulated by Trump team's lies, exaggeration, and hate rhetoric. These people believe what they see and hear, and don't spend time critically analyzing that information to know better. These people are generally burdened by life's struggles and see Trump as the Great White Hope. They don't even realize the tremendous costs with regard to safety and good living that Trump has cost them. It's likely that these people drop down into an old arm chairs at night after a tough day of work and/or struggle to listen to Trump theatrics and feel akin to his well-crafted manipulation. Somehow, we have to help these people understand that Trump policies do not make their lives better. In fact, Trump plays on the poor and downtrodden to elevate his and his cronies' and family members' wealth. He's the anti-Robin Hoold character who employs a steal from the poor and give to the rich mentality.
Right to lifers
Personally, I am not a fan of abortion, but I am also not a fan of laws against abortion. I consider myself pro-education in this matter and believe that when people are well educated and well cared for, they will make the right choices about reproduction. Abortion is not the simple issue that many old white men and women make it out to be--it is actually a very complex, personal issue that involves many, many different scenarios. I believe the issue can be likened to the work of our military--when military men and women are deployed into violent scenarios, they have to make very difficult, complex decisions. Sometimes people are killed which is never the best choice, but it happens. In the best of circumstances, our military should work to prevent death of any kind, and I believe the same is true for reproductive health--abortion should be avoided as much as possible via good health care, prevention, and education, but I don't believe we should have a hard lawful line on the matter since that has been shown to elevate trauma, dangerous abortions, and even more struggle. I do believe we should do everthing in our power to well educate and care for people, and then, with regard to reproduction, I believe individuals should have the right to make their own choices. Right to lifers who support Trump have too narrow a view of the political landscape. They are willing to let many, many Americans suffer and die under Trump's bogus, self-serving, prejudicial policies for a single issue that probably doesn't even require any sacrifice or true struggle on their part.
Racists
Sadly, in our country, there are still some people who are afraid of diversity of any kind. These people still hold narrow, dangerous views about who matters and who does not. These people are ignorant when it comes to skin shade, humanity, and human rights--they don't realize that a strong nation is a diverse nation and that most people of any shade, religion, culture, interests, and lifestyle are good people who share basic human values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These misguided, uneducated, narrow minded racists support Trump because he champions racism, hate, violence, and classism. Trump policies and actions create a society of winners (Trump-like men and women) and losers (good people who believe in a country that respect and elevate the rights of all).
In summary, I believe that Trump followers include racists, self-serving rich folks, frightened, and worn-out easily-manipulated people. The self-servers like Trump are people who don't care about others--they have a survival-of-the-fittest mentality and work for their own gain and fame. Jared and Ivanka illustrate this mindset well. The rest are simply easily manipulated, narrow minded, and afraid to work for a more inclusive, diverse, and successful society--one in which everyone lives well and profits. They don't believe this can happen--they are cynical, downtrodden, and lack imagination or real understanding of how the Trump team is ruining their environment and good living in countless ways.
I don't think we'll change the minds of the wealthy, self-serving Jared and Ivanka's of the world--they are profiting greatly in Trump times and living like kings and queens. They don't want to change things, and they are too dumb and short-sighted to realize that their children's lives depend on a peaceful world and healthy environment. I do believe, however, that we can change the minds of many downtrodden Americans who support Trump, people who are afraid of diversity and easily manipulated by Trump's lies, exaggeration, and marketing mania. I think these people can be better educated about how important it is to vote for someone who will look out for good living for all; someone who will work for a better America--an America that works for a healthy environment, positive health care, quality education, and happy, peaceful, productive communities.
Bottom line, Trump is a danger to most people's lives. He is a master marketeer and manipulator who is supported by big-money, self-servers who could care less about most people or the environment. Do the right thing--register to vote and vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, then get involved to help make this country live up to the ideals and values that support good living for all. We can do this
