When it comes to big decisions, how do you arrive at the win-win solution--a solution that includes good compromise.
The concept of compromise is one that everyone needs to study and think about.
A friend often relays to me stories of the way Tip O'Neil would work with the Reagan White House for compromise. This friend says that helped to keep civility alive in our government at that time and didn't result in the kind of dangerous fiasco we have now. I have not studied this topic, but have listened carefully and thought about the concept of compromise.
Too often we don't factor in how positive compromise and win-win solutions can be. By giving everyone something, we might gain more in the long run or we might not. Compromise is an essential consideration with any problem solving, and it's essential to think deeply about what you will give up and who or what will suffer due to that. You don't want to make compromises that result in great hardship for others, but instead compromises that follow the Getting to Yes philosophy to "go hard on the problem, not the people."
In my own small sphere of living, I want to think more about how I can work for win-win compromise in issues that relate to what I most care about in life. This is a consideration that will be helpful to all as they tackle big problems and decisions.
