Inciting or inspiring troubled youth

Some youth are troubled. There are many, many reasons for these troubles. Some are born with biological issues that create their troubled profiles. Others are the victims of abuse or neglect in the early years. Still more are corrupted by belonging to troublesome groups. There are many, many reasons why youth become troubled.

I grew up with a troubled sibling. From his earliest days he presented in ways that challenged those around him. People didn't exactly know how to handle a guy like him. They tried many, many different approaches and got lots of advice--some of which they followed and some which they did not follow.

I watched from the sidelines trying to make sense of the challenges this sibling experienced and provided to the family. I wondered what to do and tried many approaches myself to little avail. I was young and could not analyze the situation with as much knowledge or accuracy as I can now. Plus we didn't know as much then about child development, education, and public health. What we know now would help in a situation like this.

Today, however a news reporter seemed to defend the Kenosha killer as one way to support President Trump when the truth is that President Trump is a poor example and mentor for troubled youth--youth who are looking for guidance. With Trump, they are getting the guidance to hate, harm, and kill. The Kenosha killer like the El Paso and Charlottesville killers were vulnerable young men incited, in part, to kill via Trump's violent, hate-inciting tweets. This is criminal.

When I was young, the leaders did not inspire my sibling to hate and kill. In fact, they were sending messages of unity, service, and care for one another, and that, in part, probably saved my sibling from the life-ending murder that these young men committed. Trump won't spend his life in jail for inciting vulnerable young men to kill, but these young killers will spend their lives in prison. Imagine if the President had inspired vulnerable youth to commit their lives to service or wellness--imagine how their lives would be different today.
