In areas outside of our expertise, we often put our trust in others. Most times, with good research and review, we choose outside experts that do a good job and meet our expectations, but sometimes we try out experts that don't live up to our expectations and we have to suffer the consequences.
That's happened to me in the past and happened again to me recently. In some ways, it was like throwing money away since I spent good money on a service that was not done well leaving with the decision to ask the expert to redo the process or simply live with the less-than-good result.
In one past situation, we simply live with the result, and have come to realize the work wasn't as bad as we originally thought. In a recent similar experience, I'll probably just live with it too and see if my mind changes over time.
On the other hand, in another recent job, after reading the reviews and doing the research, we hired a terrific individual to repair a broken item in our home. That person exceeded our expectations.
The lesson learned is that it's worth doing the research and knowing specifically what you want before you hire an expert to provide a service--when you do less research, you run the chance of a job done that doesn't meet your expectations or the value of your dollars spent.
