Every time you make a choice, you contribute to that event, people, and places that choice relates to. When you choose, you elevate people, places, and events. The more people choose single events, places, and people, the more popular they become. Essentially our choices are our votes for what becomes popular, what takes hold in our lives and culture.
This is an important consideration because mindless choices may often prop up people, places, and events that are not good for us, however mindful choices will elevate the good that's possible.
How does this translate into our daily lives?
With this in mind, we can make the following considerations:
- Do we give our time to people we care about and people who make positive contributions to our lives, the lives of others, and the welfare of our communities?
- Do we shop at stores that support good, fair salaries and working conditions?
- Do we purchase food that is grown with good standards?
- Do we work for leaders who promote the good at the workplace and elsewhere?
As I think of these questions, I realize how difficult it is to cull down the places we work, shop, and support to the issues that matter to people. That's why we need laws, regulations, and standards to make sure that society is run in fair, equitable, and just ways. For example, today I'll make a purchase and I am shopping at a place I don't value much. I'm making that choice due to availability and price. In this circumstance, I need to make a cost-worthy choice at an available location. I have neither the money or the time to for this purchase right now to research the other places that provide the product. This is something I'll think about more, and one way I'll advocate for better is to support politicians that work for equitable, fair, just working conditions and salaries. If that's the mainstay, then we don't have to worry about individual stores and products because we know people everywhere will have the salaries and conditions they require to do their best possible job while also making a fair wage.
Today, NBC announced that they'll run a Trump event. This stands in the face of the fact that Trump refused to debate Biden online, but instead he'll run his own rally on television. NBC is likely looking forward to some good ratings because the Trump show of greedy, self-serving entertainment is hard for many to resist--he's the modern day freak show. Who can believe a man like this exists, a man who goes against acceptable behavior, responsibility, and care for his fellow individual. Likely NBC corporate leadership is rubbing their hands together as they anticipate the financial rewards of this event, an event that, like Trump, puts profits ahead of values. I won't be watching.
As we work to live our best lives in a world of endless choices, we need to recognize that every choice is a show of support for that person, place, or events. What we do clearly demonstrates who we are and what we believe in. The best that we can live a life that props up people, places, and events that lead to better living for ourselves and better protection of our environment, the better off we'll all be.
What will you choose? Why will you choose it?
