Pandemic Journey: November

We started this pandemic journey in March, and now it is November, eight months later. What's happened, and what will happen?

So far, we've been fortunate because no close family member has contracted the virus. Some of our extended family members have contracted the illness, and fortunately they survived. The greatest challenge for us personally include the many limitations and changes related to life as we knew it before the pandemic.

As a large, extended family, we've embraced the public health precautions of mask wearing, social distancing, good hygiene, getting tested, and staying informed about the virus by reading and watching the experts. I believe this has helped us to resist the illness. We have also made some dramatic changes such as working from home, changing jobs, and reworking our life's goals and plans in order to be safer. After the pandemic, we'll likely revisit some of those changes to decide next steps.

As I think about how we've changed throughout this event, I notice that what started as an all-in, we can do this enthusiasm for staying safe has turned into a daily routine of safety including more time at home, less shopping and travel, and quieter, more cerebral goals and entertainment including good shows, books, games, and time outdoors.

During the cold, dark winter months I hope to tackle my pile of great books, improve my Scrabble game, get better at preparing and enjoying a mostly plant-based diet, caring for family members with grace and strength, and building the good relationships I enjoy. If nothing else, my ability to be a more flexible thinker and doer has improved throughout these pandemic months since plans change all the time. I've also become more discerning about the information I read and watch as I try to find the best advice and ideas for living well during this time.

The pandemic journey continues. It has been much longer than I expected. Fortunately there is some good news about vaccines which helps us to imagine life without this struggle. Yet, we know that life will always present struggles great and small as it's part of life's journey, and the goal is to travel this path with strength, love, acceptance, and the will to enjoy life and do as much good as you can. Onward.
