It is vital that we all have a vision for the long road as we make decisions in the short term.
What is your long term vision? What can you do to get there?
Too often, too many are mired in short-term, quick-fix politics and decision making, and too often these short-sighted efforts obstruct the good living that's possible in the long run. We have to work against that.
My long-run vision for the country is a country that affords the following for every individual:
- clean air, clean water, clean soil
- good nutrition
- livable wage
- just work conditions
- no prejudice, racism
- quality health care and education for all
- safe communities
- healthy recreation
- protection of our beautiful public lands and resources
- fair taxation
- narrow wage gap
- no debilitating deficit
- peaceful relations with people and countries around the world
- innovation and invention that serves good living and people's basic needs
I believe that everyone profits when everyone has the opportunity to live well. I believe that to take advantage of one another so that some profit and others don't takes all of us down.
So how can I make decisions and work for this long view?
- be discerning about what I invest my time, energy, and dollars in
- be discerning about who I listen to and what I believe
- learn as much as I can about the reality of our world
- work with groups whose focus is fair, positive living for all
- work against people, industry, and organizations that forward prejudice, hate, inequity, injustice
- do my part to make a better world beginning at home and working outward
Sadly, amongst us, there are a number of self-serving people and organizations who are not interested in the public good. They do what they do mostly do prop up their own wealth and power with little regard for the needs, opportunities, and potential of others. I'm really tired of those people. Onward.
